Pat Jones - Vice Chairman

Patton K. Jones, vice chairman, ARA, A Newmark Company Central Texas office. Mr. Jones is responsible for the Austin and San Antonio conventional multifamily business, the ARA Newmark National Student Housing Group, and the ARA Newmark National Manufactured Housing Group. Mr. Jones oversees business development, market research, and all aspects of property disposition. The collective business lines produce roughly $800MM in sales annually. Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Jones was co-founder of an aviation parts company. He lived and worked in London and Hong Kong and was responsible for sales in 33 countries. The company grew 9,200% in 3 years and was winner of numerous business awards - ranked # 1 in "Houston's 100 Fastest-Growing Businesses" in 1999 by the Houston Chronicle, ranked # 7 in Dun & Bradstreet and Entrepreneur Magazine's "Hot 100, America's Fastest-Growing New Businesses 1999," and scored one of the Aviation Industries' best web sites rated by Forbes Magazine in 2000. Additionally, Mr. Jones's past work experience includes single-family patio home development, energy trading, and serving as an international sales manager for a Fortune 500 tech firm. Pat received his Political Science degree at the University of Texas at Austin.


Andrew Shih - Executive Managing Director

Andrew Shih, executive managing director, manages the Private Client Services Group (PCS) for ARA, A Newmark Company Austin's multifamily business and handles all aspects of the marketing process taken on by the PCS Group, including client development, pricing strategies, valuation/ modeling, and marketing, as well as negotiation and closing of transactions.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Andrew was a Vice President at a major brokerage company where he focused on new client development, financial underwriting, marketing and escrow management for multifamily transactions. He has been involved in the multifamily brokerage industry since 2002, closing over 185 transactions totaling over $1B. His prior real estate experience also includes researching and analyzing multifamily agency securities for the commercial mortgage-backed securities trading desk at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and analyzing residential mortgage mergers & acquisitions while part of the finance team at Chemical Bank.

Andrew received his B.S. with distinction from Cornell University and his M.B.A. in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Ryan Lang - Executive Managing Director

Austin, TX

Ryan Lang, executive managing director for ARA, A Newmark Company’s Student Housing Group, is responsible for leading the team and spearheading best-in-class investment-sale services for its clients. He has represented a multitude of large multihousing investors including Blue Vista, Harrison Street, Heitman, and American Campus Communities, the nation’s largest developer, owner and manager of student housing.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Lang was vice president and co-leader of CBRE’s National Student Housing Group. He has represented some of the largest institutional, private and public real estate companies in the country and has closed approximately $3.2 billion in real estate transactions. In 2010, Mr. Lang joined New Orleans-based Stirling Properties as director of multi-family investments. While at Stirling, Mr. Lang specialized in the sale of conventional and student housing and was one of the most active multihousing experts in the state. He was recognized as the top investment sales broker at Stirling Properties for 2011 and 2012. Mr. Lang began his real estate career in New York City at Marcus & Millichap where he gained experience in seller representation, acquisitions and investment underwriting. During his first year there, his investment team was recognized as the #1 top earning team in the office and he was awarded the Pace Setter award for 2008.

Mr. Lang regularly speaks at nationally acclaimed student housing events and was named to the ARA Newmark/ NGKF Chairman’s Circle in recognition of being one of the top producing brokers across the entire company. Mr. Lang received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Florida. He holds a real estate license in Texas, Louisiana and Alabama.

Matthew Greer - Executive Managing Director

Austin, TX

Matt Greer joined ARA, A Newmark Company as executive managing director for NGKF Capital Markets in ARA Newmark’s Austin office. He has worked in real estate in Texas since 1994, most recently with Berkadia from 2007-2016 where he financed projects in excess of $2 billion. Product type expertise includes multifamily, student housing, manufactured housing, commercial and retail properties with various structures including permanent, bridge, equity and mezzanine debt financing. Before that, Mr. Greer was a partner at AMS Real Estate (AMS), a real estate services firm where he launched an underwriting group that worked for many of the CMBS industry’s largest originators. Prior to his tenure with AMS, Mr. Greer was a vice president at Simmons Vedder Partners where he was responsible for the development and marketing of the company’s office division.

Mr. Greer graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.  He is a Certified Commercial Investment Manager (CCIM) and is active in the Mortgage Bankers Association, the National Multifamily Housing Council and the Urban Land Institute.

James Young - Senior Managing Director

Austin, TX

James Young, senior managing director, was born and raised in Austin, TX and has been in the multifamily investment sales business since 2010. Mr. Young specializes in value-add non-institutional assets. He responsibilities include originating and managing investment sales transactions including new business development, pricing strategies, marketing, as well as negotiating and closing transactions. Since 2010, James has been involved in over 200 transactions, representing over a $1B in multifamily real estate in Central Texas. He was recently honored with Newmark's 2016 Rising Stars Top 5 Performer award.

James graduated with Honors from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He also attended the University of Maastricht in Maastricht, The Netherlands, where he studied business finance and international business.


Matt Michelson - Managing Director

Austin, TX

Matt Michelson, managing director,  joined the company in 2007 and has been directly involved in the sale of more than $1.5 billion of multi-family transactions. Matt is involved in all aspects of the marketing process including business development, valuations, pricing strategies, negotiation and closing of transactions in the San Antonio and Austin region. Prior to joining ARA, A Newmark Company, Matt worked in investment sales with a large national brokerage firm. Matt attended Baylor University and graduated with a BA in Political Science.

Andrew Childers - Managing Director

Austin, TX

Andrew Childers is a managing director for ARA, A Newmark Company where he is responsible for all land brokerage activities in the Austin and San Antonio regions. Since 2007, Mr. Childers has been involved in over $300 million in land sales for a variety of product types including multifamily, office, industrial, retail, single family, seniors and affordable housing, public and non-profits. He constantly strives to add value through his advanced knowledge of the central Texas land development process by providing his clients with valuation, zoning and entitlement expertise.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Childers was with a major brokerage company where he focused on central Texas land brokerage representing both buyers and sellers.

Mr. Childers graduated from Baylor University with a BBA in Real Estate & Entrepreneurship degree in both real estate and entrepreneurship. He is also actively involved with multiple non-profits in Austin including For the City Network and the Austin Stone Community Church.

Patrick Short - Managing Director

Austin, TX

Patrick Short is managing director of NGKF Capital Markets’ debt and structured finance group in ARA, A Newmark Company’s Austin office, where he is responsible for spearheading best-in-class debt originations, joint venture/equity placement and investor relations. Mr. Short specializes in originating debt with government-sponsored enterprises (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and FHA), insurance companies, conduits/CMBS, banks and credit unions as well as arranging and structuring joint venture partnerships. He works closely with the Austin and San Antonio conventional multihousing team as well as the ARA Newmark Student Housing and Manufactured Housing groups.

With more than 13 years of experience in real estate finance, Mr. Short has extensive experience in the origination, structuring, placement and closing of a variety of income-producing property types, including multihousing, industrial, office, medical office, retail, mixed-use and self-storage properties. He has executed capital structures for permanent financing utilizing various platforms, including GSE’s (FNMA, Freddie and FHA), Conduit/CMBS, life companies and investment funds in addition to construction, bridge and Mezz/Equity placement.  

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Short was a vice president at BMC Capital, LP, where he successfully opened the Austin office in 2006, represented private and institutional investors and was recognized as the top originator at the firm from 2012 to 2014. Before that, he was an originator for a regional bank for four years.

Mr. Short’s professional affiliations include the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) and the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). He graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in management.


Michelle Davidson - Marketing Manager

Austin, TX

Michelle Davidson, marketing manager, joined ARA, A Newmark Company in 2013 bringing eight years of commercial real estate, marketing, and graphic design experience to the team. Michelle oversees office operations and directs all marketing, advertising, and public relations for the ARA Newmark Central Texas office. She leads the marketing team and is responsible for the day-to-day production of proposals, offering memorandums, marketing collateral, and flyers. In addition to her responsibilities to the local office, Michelle also supports the national Manufactured Housing Group.

Michelle joined ARA Newmark after serving as Marketing Manager for Barshop & Oles Company, a privately-owned full service commercial real estate development and management company. There, she was responsible for the day-to-day production of property marketing collateral and the development and execution of advertising and marketing campaigns while simultaneously assisting the leasing and property management teams with transactions for the retail portfolio. Prior to joining Barshop & Oles, Michelle served as the Marketing Coordinator for Grubb & Ellis Company where she was responsible for the firm’s daily marketing functions. Working with the Austin team, she ensured compliance with corporate national branding standards and oversaw the production and design of all marketing and promotional collateral for new business, office, industrial, and retail leasing.

Michelle earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. She is an active volunteer with Austin Pets Alive! and a Texas Exes Life Member. Michelle currently runs her own freelance graphic design business and is also a licensed notary public for the State of Texas.

Kelsey Carroll - Marketing Coordinator

Austin, TX

Kelsey Carroll, marketing coordinator, joined Newmark Knight Frank in 2016, bringing seven years of marketing and graphic design experience to the team. In her role, she is responsible for helping compile and produce in-house offering documents, video presentations, advertising design and aiding in the press release process for office transactions. She works closely with the Central Texas multihousing team, the national Student Housing and Manufactured Housing groups. 

Prior to joining Newmark Knight Frank, Ms. Carroll worked her way up from marketing assistant to communication and design lead at HTS, a commercial HVAC manufacturer’s representative. There, she helped grow the marketing department from a two-person operation in Texas to a four-person team serving their global offices. Ms. Carroll was responsible for all print and web design materials, email marketing, social media marketing, maintaining the company website, blogging technical content, writing press releases, tradeshow displays and signage and was heading up the redesign of the firm’s global website. Working with 60+ sales teams, she maintained brand standards across the company and its sister corporations, helped plan and execute company-wide events and served as the liaison for coordinating printing and shipping of marketing materials. Ms. Carroll also previously worked as a marketing assistant for the School of Information Science and Learning Technology at the University of Missouri for three years where she developed marketing materials, assisted with web design and learned the basics of operating a marketing department.

Ms. Carroll is a Chicago native and graduated from the University of Missouri in 2012 with Magna Cum Laude honors and a Bachelor of Journalism degree. 

Nathan Wilder - Senior Financial Analyst

Austin, TX

Nathan Wilder is a senior financial analyst for ARA, A Newmark Company where he is responsible for the underwriting, financial analysis, market research, and due diligence of multifamily assets. Since joining the company in 2014, Mr. Wilder has underwritten and analyzed over $9 billion in investment grade multifamily assets. Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Wilder worked as a processor for a private consulting firm specializing in forensic financial risk analysis. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a double major in Mathematics and Economics.

Brandon Buell - Transaction Manager

Austin, TX

Brandon Buell is a transaction manager with ARA, A Newmark Company’s Student Housing group where he is responsible for all aspects of property dispositions and the marketing process as well as market research, developing new business and fostering existing business relationships.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Buell was an associate partner at ApexOne Investment Partners, a private equity group in Houston, TX where his primary responsibilities included acquisitions, dispositions and asset management for both student housing and conventional multifamily assets within a 33-state region. During his tenure there, Mr. Buell sourced 100 percent of the student housing properties for the fund and asset managed 75 percent of the student housing portfolio. Other responsibilities included overseeing due diligence and renovations, and reporting to joint venture partners. Mr. Buell worked closely with an array of large student housing joint venture partners including Crow Holdings, Balfour Beatty, Behringer Harvard and Rockstreet Partners. His experience in acquiring approximately $400 million of student housing and conventional apartment properties throughout the country provides vital knowledge to clients in valuing assets and developing disposition strategies.

Mr. Buell graduated from the Rawls Business School at Texas Tech University. He has been involved with his church in many capacities including Elder, Chairman of the School Committee and high school youth advisor. He has also served as a director on a Houston area Municipal Utility District board for more than 12 years. Mr. Buell, a native Houstonian, still resides there along with his wife and two children.

Andrew Wilson - Transaction Manager

Austin, TX

Andrew Wilson is a transaction manager for the NGKF Capital Markets group in ARA, A Newmark Company’s Austin office where his primary responsibilities include managing all aspects of the transaction process including underwriting, marketing, client and lender contact and closings for Central Texas. Additionally, he assists the team with the origination of construction, interim and permanent debt, mezzanine financing and equity for commercial real estate assets in various stages of the investment cycle including acquisitions, refinances, partnership buyouts and new development.

Mr. Wilson began his tenure with ARA Newmark as the senior financial analyst for ARA Newmark’s Affordable Housing team, where he was responsible for overseeing the production and completion of the team’s broker price opinions (BPO’s) and other ad hoc analyses, as well as the team’s marketing materials and marketing analyses. Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Wilson worked for Wentwood Capital Advisors, a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) asset and fund manager where he helped lead the valuation team in the underwriting of the company's portfolio and was responsible for the underwriting of potential acquisitions. He has experience in underwriting over $6 billion in assets, in both sell-side and buy-side analysis.

Mr. Wilson graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. He has since received his Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) certification and is currently a Level 2 Candidate in his pursuit to become a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Joe Goss - Financial Analyst

Austin, TX

Joe Goss joined ARA, A Newmark Company as a financial analyst and is responsible for the underwriting, financial analysis and market research of multifamily assets in the central Texas area, as well as student housing assets nationwide. Mr. Goss originally graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics, and went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin’s Master of Science program in finance.

Trent Houchin - Senior Financial Analyst

Austin, TX

Trent Houchin is the senior financial analyst for ARA, A Newmark Company’s Student Housing group where he is responsible for the financial analysis of all properties and portfolios including the research of economic drivers, underwriting and performance benchmarking in support of the company’s investment sales services. In this role, Mr. Houchin leverages a unique expertise in development, acquisition and disposition analysis including that of primary, secondary and tertiary markets. He is actively involved throughout the entire disposition process from the production of marketing materials and reports, to assistance through due diligence, and he has worked closely with some of the largest student housing owners in the country. Over the course of the past year, Mr. Houchin was responsible for the comprehensive analysis of over $3 billion of investment grade student housing assets.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Houchin worked as a lead analyst for a development firm based in Austin, Texas where he was responsible for targeting new development and investment opportunities, financial analysis and coordination and submission of materials, plans, and reports as necessary for project entitlement.

Mr. Houchin graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in finance.

Ben Harkrider - Financial Analyst

Austin, TX

Ben Harkrider is a financial analyst for ARA, A Newmark Company’s Student Housing group where he is responsible for underwriting, financial analysis and comprehensive market research of student housing assets nationwide. He is actively involved throughout the entire disposition process from the production of marketing materials and reports, to assistance through due diligence.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Harkrider worked internships at prominent student housing companies, including Coastal Ridge Real Estate Partners and Peak Property Group where his primary responsibilities included discounted cash flow modeling, property management, market research of economic drivers and financial analysis.

Mr. Harkrider earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Texas and a Business Foundations Certificate from the McCombs School of Business.
